BAIC BJ40 EREV

2026-10-03 18:40:01

The BAIC BJ40 EREV is an all-new electrified model series introduced in April 2025 by BAIC, built upon its classic "boxy" rugged SUV architecture. Serving as a crucial milestone in the marque's new energy transition, the BJ40 EREV combines a range-extender powertrain with genuine off-road capability to address common drawbacks of conventional ICE rugged SUVs—notably high fuel consumption and lacklustre urban ride comfort—thereby establishing the "rugged extended-range SUV" niche.

Vehicle Overview

The BJ40 EREV retains the signature ladder-frame chassis structure of the BJ40 bloodline whilst introducing an all-round overhaul in powertrain technology and smart connectivity.

Key Highlights: Extended-Range Rugged SUV, Boxy Silhouette, Off-Road Pedigree, All-Terrain Intelligent Electric Drive.

Product Core: At the heart of this SUV is a highly efficient range-extender system that pairs seamless electric drive with robust 4WD capability. Its main strengths include refined and quiet urban driving dynamics, low running costs, outstanding driving range, and precise torque vectoring control across off-road terrains.

Market Positioning: Positioned in the RM150,000 to RM200,000 price bracket, it targets young families seeking a dual-purpose vehicle that effortlessly tackles daily urban commutes and adventurous off-road getaways.

Development History

Background: Amid a growing consumer base for rugged 4x4s, demand for better fuel efficiency and advanced cabin tech has risen steadily. In response, BAIC officially debuted the BJ40 EREV in April 2025, meeting market demand for a more economical and refined rugged SUV through powertrain innovation.

Model Evolution:

April 2025: The standard BJ40 EREV was officially launched, marking a key milestone for the nameplate.

November 2025: The Yuanjing Zhixing Edition debuted, bringing enhanced ADAS capabilities to the lineup.

May 2026: The BJ40 EREV Long Range Edition went on sale. Fitted with a high-capacity 49.4 kWh battery pack, it delivers an all-electric range of 252 km and an overall cruising range exceeding 1,300 km, effectively eliminating range anxiety on long-distance overland expeditions.

Key Achievements: Since its introduction, the BJ40 EREV has consistently topped sales charts in its segment month after month, serving as a vital growth driver in BAIC's brand transformation.

Market Performance

Competitive Landscape: Within BAIC's current portfolio, the BJ40 EREV bridges the gap between traditional off-road heritage and cutting-edge automotive tech. Compared to similarly priced urban SUVs, its rugged body-on-frame platform offers distinct structural advantages; against conventional petrol-powered off-roaders, it delivers superior energy efficiency, smoother power delivery, and enhanced NVH levels.

Customer Feedback: Owners have widely praised its iconic boxy styling and the whisper-quiet, responsive driving experience delivered by the range-extender system. Furthermore, its purpose-tuned off-road suspension setup, high ground clearance, and obstacle-clearing capabilities under demanding terrain remain central to positive user reviews.

Key Specifications & Technology

Powertrain Architecture: Powered by a high-efficiency range-extender system boasting a peak generator efficiency of 97.5%. It is fitted with CATL Freevoy off-road-optimised battery packs ranging from 40.3 kWh to 49.4 kWh (Long Range Edition), engineered specifically to withstand heavy vibrations and severe off-road impacts.

All-Terrain Intelligent Electric Drive: Comes standard with an intelligent electronic 4WD system and ATS (All-Terrain System) featuring 11 selectable driving modes, including Rock, Mud, and Sand. The electronic central differential lock delivers significantly faster engagement compared to traditional mechanical differential locks.

Chassis & Safety: Built with a heavy-duty ladder-frame chassis comprising two longitudinal side members and eight crossmembers, combined with a high-strength safety cage for maximum structural rigidity. The battery pack is protected underneath by the "Xuanwu Armour" shield. In addition, BAIC introduced an industry-first "1-to-1 vehicle replacement policy against spontaneous thermal runaway of the battery, motor, and electronic control units", offering unmatched peace of mind.

Future Plans

As of June 2026, strategic priorities for the BJ40 EREV include:

Lineup Expansion: Continuously refining variant grades and equipment levels based on diverse customer demands for range and features, ensuring optimal value in the RM150,000 to RM200,000 segment.

OTA Software Updates: Regularly rolling out over-the-air firmware updates to refine driver-assist algorithms and improve environmental sensing in complex off-road terrains.

Brand Community & Lifestyle: Cultivating BAIC's off-road lifestyle community through official overland expeditions, off-road driving clinics, and customer engagement programmes.
